New uses for materials Interpretations

The “New uses for materials-Interpretations of lace and embroidery for new applications” competition was originally launched in 2004, within the framework of the European EQUAL project “Promotion of lace and embroidery crafts and techniques”, with aid from the European Social Fund.
It was addressed to students at schools of fashion, applied arts, design and architecture with the objective of stimulating exploration into possible transformations and uses for lace and embroidery in fields that had hitherto remained largely unexplored and for objects of daily use. The three sessions held in 2005, 2006 and 2008, involved a total of more than 400 students from some 15 schools. The surprising results were presented to the profession and the public at various events. The prize giving for the 4th session (23 candidates winning 4 awards) was held on the 9 June 2010 at the French Federation of Lace and Embroidery in Paris.
